Resume
We are here for you
Whether you are part of the 70% of the workforce preparing for a potential layoff or you are already affected, take a deep breath and keep reading.
First: We are sorry. We have prepared this check list so you can be fully prepared by the end.
Second: It is virtually impossible to not experience a layoff, reduction in force or similar action in ones career. It is not a reflection on you.
Third: You are not responsible for this happening to you. However, the most responsible thing for you to do is to take it seriously, work through this list and start working on getting back to work.
Get a Copy
-
Get a copy of your job description, the layoff notice, termination letter or any other paperwork provided from the company. This is critical documentation for applying for benefits, jobs, and filing taxes.
Treat it as an Emergency
-
This is a big disruption in daily life. Treat this an emergency both in the sense of importance (as it will take time to work through), impact to your daily routine, and a plan for your own wellbeing to manage the stress (such as daily walk, time with family, seek support, etc.). It is a good time to check in on your finances and change spending habits as you work through any and all unemployment benefits.
Focus on Your Resume
-
This is your time to shine, set a new direction and separate yourself from the rest of the group.
Benefits
-
You may be owed money from unemployment benefits (both healthcare and stipend), may be receiving some form of compensation from the former employer and need to confirm health insurance coverage (in the US this is often provided through COBRA, the former employer, or in some states the state government).
-
Each State in the US manages this differently so helpful resources beyond your state's labor department are US Government's overview on Unemployment Benefits and the US Department of Labor's overview on Unemployment Insurance.
Reflect on a New Direction
-
What types of roles are interesting to you now? Do you have any constraints such as location, industry knowledge or skillsets that we can start address now?
-
Save job descriptions even if you are not ready to apply as this is important in updating your resume!
Network
-
Update your LinkedIn
-
Talk those in your community (school, religious organization, local business chamber of commerce and non-profits)
-
Reach out to small businesses you can provide value to (as they do not have the time to post every need or job online)
